Asian Benzene prices rangebound as marker moves forward in backwardated markets / Closed Europe-US Arbitrage drives US buyers to Asia market / Thin discussion in Taiwan

As the market reverted to its previous direction, Asian benzene fell by 34 cents/mt on August 16th at $1000.33/mt. Market participants were influenced by the stronger upstream markets and assessed October laycans at $996/mt. This was an $8/mt increase on the same day. As of the Asian close, the front-month October ICE Brent contract increased 61 cents/b from the previous day to $80.56/b. Some market participants believe that the competition for benzene will heat up when US traders and buyers return to FOB Korea after a closed Europe/US arbitrage. "China will see further downstream expansions." One trader stated that US participants would have to pay more to get [South] Korean volume.
