A second session of selling was seen in the
Asian benzene markets amid concerns about weak markets for benzene-derived
products. Early
morning, the paper market traded in a lower price range. August benzene papers
were offered at as low as $808-828/mt. In
the afternoon, the August paper offer dropped to $802-822/mt. This was mainly
due to a fall in the market for styrene. Sources
were indicating at least $5-6/mt spreads in time between Q4 and monthly paper
contracts. The downstream styrene markets
have been hit hard by the weakening demand, and also due to the worsening
dollar/yuan rate. Prices on CFR China and FOB Korean basis were $922-932/mt.
