Outlook bearish for polyester sector as it enters lull period / Operating rates of polyester plants are 1% lower than last week

Limited trades were recorded on the Asian glycols markets in the week ending May 3, due to the Labor Day holiday in China, which took place from May 1-5. Sources said that the number of trades for monoethylene glycol done before the holiday season began was slightly higher than the April 26 as buyers were trying to meet their near-term needs. The overall market mood was negative, however, because the downstream polyester sector, which is the most important, was about to enter its usual lull period. As of April 30, estimates were 92%, which is 1% less than the previous week. Sources said that as downstream manufacturing is typically lower during summer, it's expected that operating rates will be further reduced after the holidays. This would dampen MEG demand.
