participants reported that prices in the Asian MEG market rose on April 20,
following a report that a major manufacturer planned to delay the start-up of
its new capacity by at least one month. Some market participants expressed
concerns about the sustainability of this price hike, given the persistently
weak demand on the downstream polyester markets. Traders said that low
operating rates in MEG plants in China (estimated at 48.52 percent in the past
week) could support MEG prices. However, the buying appetite was ultimately
