- Benzene derivatives markets are experiencing a decline
in demand- Benzene Premium over Styrene Assessed at $20.50-25.75/mt

The European market saw a decline in
benzene prices on May 23, due to pressure from the thin margins of styrene and
continued weak demand for other derivatives. The laycan for five to 30
days of forward delivery was $965.50/mt, down $9/mt in one day. The market interest for both benzene & styrene appeared
to be moving forward into June, as no activity was heard on either market May
23. The downstream styrene market was
quiet on May 23. As the end of May approached,
one producer said that benzene was the focus. The spread between these two products was only $20.50-25.75/mt.
This is well below the $200-$250/mt level that the market typically quotes as
being balanced.
