The Asian paraxylene price continued its downward trend, with little evidence of support in the near future. Asian PX was down $7/mt for the day to $970.67/mt CFR Taiwan/China August 14. Participants in the market are relying solely on a possible increase in demand for polyester fibres due to the winter season that is coming up in Asia. Sources said that PX prices are unlikely to rise much unless the downstream industry recovers as expected. Despite some planned shutdowns in the coming months, there is little hope that PX will be tighter on supply. CNOOC Ningbo Daxie Petrochemical, a subsidiary owned by the state-run China National Offshore Oil Corp., will close its 1.6 mt/year PX plant located in Daxie (east Ningbo) from October 10 for two months.
