Asian Paraxylene: Prices drop to a two-year low / China's Pengwei closes PTA plant / Indonesian downstream market looks weak

The Asian paraxylene price reversed a day's gains to drop to a two-year low, as the outlook remains firmly bearish. Asian PX was down by $22.34/mt for the day to $874.33/mt, CFR Taiwan/China September 4, its lowest level since December 24, 2021 when it was estimated at $861.33/mt. A trader in China predicted that PX prices would fall as crude oil prices fell. The market today is weak. Pengwei, China's purified Terephthalic Acid plant closing announcement also failed to incite much enthusiasm. Pengwei Petrochemical ceased operation at its Chongqing PTA plant, which produces 900 000 mt/year of PTA. The company cited weak economics as well as challenges with ensuring stable raw material supplies.
