Even after Memorial Day, the unofficial
beginning of the US summer, polyethylene terephthalate demand remained weak and
margins were thin in the week ending May 31. One converter reported
that the demand for PET sheets, thermoforms, and bottles has fallen 7%-15%
compared to previous years. This is because consumers are not buying as many
products at end-use. The domestic PET
price has seen a slight increase due to higher paraxylene feedstock contracts
for April. However, it remains 36% below the previous year. Import prices have fallen by 42% over the past year due to
