The lack of demand and ample supply led to
a decline in Asian ethylene prices between $20-$30/mt on June 12. CFR Northeast Asia ethylene fell $20/mt on June
9, to $730/mt on June 12. This is the lowest price since August 28, 2020 when
it was $725/mt. According to market sources, steam crackers that
use naphtha in Asia will likely reduce their operations due to the narrowing
gap between ethylene and naphthalen. The price
of upstream naphtha was $542.875/mt CFR Japan on June 12, down by $11.50/mt
compared to June 9. The spread between naphtha and ethylene was
$187.125/mt on June 12. This is lower than the usual breakeven spreads of
