- Naphtha plunges $53.75—58.90/mt on day- Buyers flee from weak downstream

March 16th saw a muted trade in
Asian propylene markets. Participants were largely on wait-and see mode due to
volatility in upstream naphtha market. Although spreads between propylene & naphtha have been
improving due to falling naphtha prices, sentiment was low as market
participants were worried about poor downstream demand. On March 16, upstream naphtha prices fell $53.75/mt to
$615/mt C+F Japan marker. A China-based
analyst stated that the prices of propylene (and polypropylene) are almost
identical now. This is bad news for the market demand.
