Naphtha East : West spread narrows / Backwardation is largely unchanged

The crack spread on the European naphtha markets narrowed a little bit, but the backwardation was still high. The East-West spread shrank sharply that day. This was due to a closed arbitrage of naphtha going from Europe to Asia. The traders' view that there wasn't much blending was supported by the narrowing gasoline/naphtha split. According to one source this was because of the "greater availability" of finished gasoline grades, and not the narrowing naphtha spread. Another Europe-based petrochemical dealer said that the demand from the petrochemical industry was low due to the season. "But the market anticipated the second half of the [government] year would be better in China."
