On the European naphtha markets, May 31, backwardation was less than it had been in recent weeks. The crack spread also shrank slightly. Meanwhile, East-Wests – the spread between CFR Japan naphtha and CIF NWE – increased. A European trader said that the "naphtha markets are stable, but sentiment is weaker... With gasoline prices dropping, it's hard to get bullied up on naphtha." Source: "Eastern-Western spreads are higher but premiums in Asia have not improved much," which is adding to the weakness in Europe. The demand for gasoline blending naphtha was weaker than anticipated despite the summer driving season. This was further exacerbated because of a narrower spread between naphtha and gasoline.
