Naphtha Backwardation Slope / East-West Spread narrows slightly

The East-West spread shrank slightly on the European naphtha markets, April 23, reversing a trend that had been observed in the previous days. Recent arbitrage of naphtha between Europe and Asia has led to a rise in the East-West naphtha split. A market participant stated that the arbitrage was due to "reductions in supply of naphtha coming from the Arab Gulf and" some strength in Asian cracking demands, along with possible uncertainty about Middle Eastern tensions, Russian naphtha flows into Asia. Irving Oil announced in a post on social media that it was beginning a four week turnaround at its Saint John Refinery in New Brunswick.
