Naphtha Backwardation Less Slope / Crack, East-West Spreads Change Slightly

The European naphtha markets saw a decrease in backwardation on May 14, as the market sentiment remained mixed. There was a relative weak pull from petrochemicals and no uplift for gasoline blending due to the summer driving season. The gasoline-naphtha differential widened on the day to support the flow of naphtha into gasoline blend pools, especially heavy grades. The spread between the front-month gasoline and Its naphtha-equivalent is now $215.25/mt compared to $213.25/mt on May 10. The summer driving season is likely to make naphtha even more popular as a component in gasoline blends. In its monthly report on the oil market, OPEC said that despite significant uncertainty regarding geopolitical events and economic forecasts, they retained their estimates for global oil consumption in 2024-2025.
