spot prices soared May 26, in line with firmer gasoline complex. Outright MTBE
FOB ARA prices rose $11/mt on the day to $1,018/mt amid higher crude oil. ICE
Brent crude oil futures closed the London trading day at $76.92/b on May 26, up
74 cents/b on the day. Despite this, the premium over front-month gasoline swap
remained steady on the day at $187/mt. One source said that the trading activity
was subdued. "The gasoline backwardation means arbitrage from other
regions such as Asia or even Middle East becomes very challenging", he
said, adding that most of ARA activity is taking place through barges. Another
