The European MTBE Spot Prices soared on May
26 in response to a firmer gasoline market. The price of MTBE FOB ARA
rose by $11/mt to $1,018/mt in one day due to higher crude oil. ICE Brent crude futures ended the London trading session on
May 26 at $76.92/b, up 74 cents/b from the previous day. The premium on front-month gasoline swaps remained unchanged
at $187/mt. According to one source, trading
activity is subdued. He said that
arbitrage in other regions, such as Asia and even the Middle East, is very
difficult because of gasoline backwardation. According to another source, the market was balanced. He said that the wide spread between gasoline and naphtha
