Asian MTBE: Weak crude lowers downstream markets / China's supply is restricted / Arbitrage between China and Singapore closed for 2 months

MTBE FOB Singapore Asian fell $15/mt in a single day to $784/mt, while the MTBE FOB Singapore Factor remained at 1.058. The downstream markets fell as crude prices declined on Aug. 2. The October Brent crude futures fell $1.32/b to $80.03/b on August 2. On Aug. 2, the crack price of 92RON gasoline to Brent crude oil fell by $1.67/b from $8.05/b. The price of 92RON gasoline also dropped $1.7/b on the same day, falling to $87.70/b. According to a China-based source, gasoline demand was weak in China but high prices were caused by supply constraints. A second source stated that Chinese producers were reducing production and operations to maintain prices above $800/mt F.O.B. China. This was viewed by the Chinese market as a floor price.
