Asian MTBE : FOB Singapore increases $8.50/mt per week; factor stays stable / FOB China trade remains small / Gasoline blend demand in Straits is sluggish

Asian MTBE increased by $8.50/mt between Aug. 8 and $768.50/mt at FOB Singapore, and grew $19/mt on the same day. This was due to ICE Brent crude oil futures rising above $80/barrel as well as wider gasoline margins. On Aug. 16, the spread between the FOB Singapore 92RON gasoline price, and October crude oil futures increased by 39.59% from day to day. It was $5.43/b. Normally, MTBE demand would increase when margins are wider for gasoline production. However, demand was low during the week beginning August 12. A trade source in Singapore stated earlier this week that the demand for the octane boost remained low due to the abundance of other blendstocks as well as the abundant supply of finished grade gas, particularly from China.
