Methanol prices in East China rise by Yuan 90 to 100/mt / Lack of bids and offers at fixed prices for CFR India methanol cargoes

On May 13, the tight supply of methanol in China pushed up prices in India. From May 10, domestic methanol in east China prices soared from Yuan 90-100/mt (12.50-13.88/mt) to Yuan 2,750-2.765/mt (ex-tank). A trader stated that "Inventory was tight in May." Market sources reported that end-users rushed to replenish the domestic methanol markets on May 13. Some sources claimed that the Iranian methanol supply to China in May was limited, but others disagreed and said it was stable at 700,000mt. The tight supply in China is due to a lack of non-Iranian cargoes. The CFR Korea and CFR Southeast Asia methanol price of $361/mt each and $363.75/mt respectively meant that non-Iranian sellers had little incentive to move spot cargoes from other countries to China.
