The Asian methanol market closed the week with prices that were stable to slightly lower as the bullish sentiment surrounding China's stimulus program, which was launched just a fortnight earlier, began to fade on October 18. Southeast Asian methanol spot discussions remained quiet as participants concentrated on contract negotiations next year. Some sources reported that the coastal methanol stock in China grew to 1.1 mt by mid-week (Oct.16), which changed the outlook. On October 18, the January methanol contract at Zhengzhou Commodity Exchange was Yuan 87/mt down from Oct. 14. It closed at Yuan 2,412/mt. Sources said that this dip will be temporary, but fundamentals could turn positive later in the third quarter, due to Iranian methanol plants shutting down due to winter feedstock shortages.
