Asian Methanol prices stable despite thin trade / Asia quieter than usual due to Chinese New Year / Arbitrage between China and Europe closed

The Asian methanol market was quiet on Jan. 31 due to the Lunar New Year holiday. The majority of participants waited to see what the Chinese market would do after returning from holidays on February 4. Zhengzhou futures were last settled before the Chinese New Year holiday at Yuan 2,561/mt. Arrivals in May 2025 are scheduled. Sources said that most participants wouldn't want to take a position on inventory given the uncertain economic climate. Sources said that the arbitrage between China and Europe remains closed until freight rates less than $100/mt can be achieved.
