The Chinese methanol trading market was quieter on May 2, as the country was closed from May 1-5 for Labor Day. Customers in Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines began to inquire about spot cargoes midweek after the market learned of the impending closure of a regional producer of methanol. Malaysia's Petronas Chemicals Group will move its 1.7million mt/year Number 2 methanol plant to Laburan Island by May 4, a company source said. A company source confirmed that the No. 2 methanol facility on Laburan Island will be operational by May 4. The source said that technical issues at the plant had affected production and that repairs could take up to two weeks.
