May 5, Asian MEG fell $8/mt from day to day, at $500/mt CFR China. Analysts claim that the production costs for coal-based MEG
is high and above the breakeven point of $750/mt. Sources said that there could be a rationalization in the
supply of MEG as a downcycle occurs. Sources
said that new capacity additions will exceed the expected growth in demand for
the next couple of years, resulting in margins being lower or even negative. Sources said that many plants would have to reduce their
