April 20, the European benzene markets were quiet ahead of the opening of the
settlement window to determine the contract price for May the next
day. The laycan for five to thirty days of forward delivery was valued at
$1,105.50-1,145.75/mt. This is down $1-2/mt due to a structure that was
backwardated between April and may. Due to a thin demand, the market
appears to be backwardated. Little recovery is expected for the next
month. Styrene was also in short supply downstream. It was reported that
the construction sector in Italy would improve for the next month. However, the
expected demand for polystyrene derivatives is likely to fall below the
