LLDPE was largely down in the week to May 17 on weak demand. Most market
participants were away for APIC conference in India. Asia margins remain
doubtful due to higher energy costs on the year, market observers
said. New capacity additions are seen exceeding expected demand growth for
the next few years, which might keep margins in the negative region, sources
said. The outlook was mixed on uncertainty over restarts and rising
near-term feedstock costs, while PE demand deficit in Asia is estimated to be
13 million mt/year in 2023 and for PP at 2 million mt/year. The outlook
for the second half of 2023 was bleak, with operating rates likely to be one of
