The Asian ethylene market was barely discussed during the week ending May 31. Many participants were away at the Asian Petrochemical Industry Conference in Seoul. The week saw few trades, but one deal was heard early in the week for $850/mt CFR Northeast Asia. Some participants stated that new discussions about July cargoes may begin next week as most buyers are covered for June. Some sources claim that ethylene demand in China could rise as some methanol to olefins factories in China have reportedly reduced their operating rates or closed. The supply is plentiful, and operating rates are expected to stay the same month over month at most Asian steam crackers that use naphtha.
