Indonesia Grants Freeport a Six-Month Permit for Copper Export Amid Smelter Repairs

Indonesia has granted Freeport Indonesia an export permit for copper that will last six months to help support its operations as it repairs its damaged smelter. According to media reports, this decision is intended to maintain royalty payments to the government and to assist Freeport to recover from the recent disruption caused by an fire. Energy Minister Bahlil lahadalia announced on March 17, 2025 the extension of the permit, highlighting the government's dedication to continuing revenue from the mining firm during this time. Lahadalia said, "We're giving them six months to repair the smelter quickly and ensure Indonesia gets state revenue from royalties."
