The Asian naphtha
markets increased activity on May 4, with one offer tender, while the
bearishness persisted amid a lackluster demand for downstream products and
macroeconomic worries. The backwardation on the derivatives markets narrowed in
midafternoon Asia trading May 4. Brokers
pinned the front-month swap June-July Japan Naphtha spread at $1.50/mt. This is
down from $1.75/mt as of the Asian close on May 3. The drop in naphtha could be attributed to macroeconomic
issues such as interest rate hikes and banking problems, along with a fall in
crude oil prices. A trader stated that the
demand for naphtha as a blendstock in gasoline has also been declining, due to
a decline in gasoline demand....
