The Asian styrene market closed on May 3,
$20-25/mt down, as the upstream markets declined that day amid a negative
macroeconomic outlook. Meanwhile, the benzene mark FOB Korea fell by
$48/mt and now stands at $884/mt. Market
activities were low due to Chinese market participants still being away on
holidays. Korean producers also saw a turn around. The Chinese market is expected to return from its extended
Labor Day holiday on May 4 The outlook for styrene, and its derivatives in the
near term was generally bearish. Some
participants, however, said that there was some hope for a recovery of
Chinese demand based on anecdotal reports of increased spending during
Golden Week holidays, which in turn drove upstream demand, from package to
monomer.
