Asian HDPE: Trends down amid weak demand / Weak economic prospects in China / Slow trade in Southeast Asia

The Asian market for high density polyethylene was impacted by a weak demand and a bearish mood in the week ending July 24. HDPE CFR Fareast Asia was down $10/mt from the previous week to $940/mt. The Southeast Asia marker also fell $10/mt this week, down to $990/mt. Trading activity in Southeast Asia was minimal as buyers waited and watched, hoping that prices would continue to soften. Sources also believed that the freight costs and congestion in Singapore's port would decrease in August. This would allow prices to fall slightly. A trader said that buyers and converters are not in the mood to hold inventory, as they believe prices will fall.
