Asian HDPE market: China market slows down amid weak downstream demand / Prices in Southeast Asia rise on increased purchasing activity / India prices rise on increased discussions

In the week leading up to May 29, Chinese demand for high density polyethylene was weak. Sources said that discussions on the dollar-denominated shipments remained mostly range bound and that end-users weren't in a hurry to replenish their inventories. HDPE film grade is down $5/mt from the previous week to $970/mt CFR Fareast Asia. A trader said that the downstream demand was not very good. It felt like the off-peak period had begun. This typically lasts between May and July, when downstream products like pipes and tarpaulins are in lower demand. In Southeast Asia, the trend of prices increasing was due to a rise in purchasing activity this week. Buyers were trying to buy cargoes to avoid additional increases in freight charges.
