On May 9, the Asian naphtha spot market
experienced an increase in activity. One buy tender was issued due to
macroeconomic instability and a lack of recovery in the downstream industry. In the afternoon trade,
backwardation on the derivatives market increased. The front-month June-July Japan Naphtha Swap Spread was
pegged at $3/mt by brokers, up from $2.75/mt on May 8, the Asian close. One trader warned that the increase in the derivatives
markets was not indicative of fundamentals on the physical market. Sources attribute the pessimism in the market to the slow
pace of China's recovery and global economic instability. General Administration of Customs released data on May 9
