Asian Glycols: Strengthening amid tight supply / MEG prices increase $20/mt in the past week / Polyester demand remains weak

Low operating rates in China continue to limit supply and encourage price discussions. According to sources in the market, a major Chinese producer that had lowered its operating rates due to problems at his plant during the previous week has extended maintenance. Sources said that the operating rates of its naphtha unit were around 50% and its MEG unit at 50%-60%. MEG prices were $20/mt higher than the previous week, at $568/mt CFR China on August 30. Sources said that, downstream, the operating rates of polyester plants were stable from week to week, at 86%. The lull period continued. A trader said that the demand for finished goods has not seen any major increase. Diethylene glycol prices were supported by lower operating rates, but the demand was unchanged. Market sources...
