Asian Glycols: Buying slows despite higher discussion levels / Discussion levels higher amid increased crude oil prices / Polyester operating rates fall 4% WOW

Buying in the Asian monoethylene glycols markets fell in the week ended Jan. 17, particularly in the Chinese domestic markets, as further run rate cuts at polyester plants in China continued to weigh on buying appetite for prompt cargoes. Discussion levels were higher on the back of increased crude oil prices, but few buyers were driven to increase purchases, citing sufficient inventory ahead of the Lunar New Year holidays. Operating rates at polyester facilities in China fell to an estimated 83% in the week ended Jan. 10, 4% lower than the 87% recorded in the week before. This impacted MEG activity, several sources said, as buying would continue to taper down given expectations of further run rate cuts.
