The Asian glycols market was slow in the week ended Oct. 18. Several participants cited uncertainty due to the fall in crude oil price. The December ICE Brent futures dropped $3.50/b in one week, to $77.46/b October 18. Market sources reported that the drop in prices affected the trade in key downstream polyester sectors, resulting in a weaker confidence in buyers and lower sales volumes. Sources said that stock levels of major polyester yarn and fiber grades increased due to the sluggish trading. Operating rates in the week were estimated to be 92%, the same as the week ending October 11. However, purchasing activity for monoethylene glycol and purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA), along with lower polyester sales, slowed, according to some producers.
