The Asian naphtha markets started the week
of May 29 with a stronger note, despite being oversupplied. One offer tender
was issued. The
derivatives market reflected a stronger sentiment as the backwardation
increased in the afternoon trade of May 29. Brokers set the front-month swap spread for Japan's
June-July naphtha at 50 cents/mt. This was up from 25 cents/mt on May 26 at the
Asian close. The recovery of the naphtha
industry is hampered by the persistently low demand for downstream
petrochemicals and razor-thin margins. However, supply is steady because
refinery margins remain profitable. Some
