The Asian naphtha markets started the week
May 22 on a steady note. One tender was concluded, as supply continues to
outpace demand in the complex despite a slowdown in demand due to cracker
turnaround season. The
derivatives market reflected the relatively balanced fundamentals, as the
backwardation was unchanged in mid-morning trading on May 22. The front-month swap spread for Japan's June-July naphtha
was 25 cents/mt. This is unchanged from the Asian closing on May 19. The market for naphtha is oversupplied at the moment, and
buyers have a lot of choice. "Although
heavy full-range naphtha still shows some support, the aromatic margins are
decreasing," said an end user. Some
market participants were hopeful...
