Ex-China supplies seen available / Asian butadiene naphtha spreads above breakeven

On April 16, the Asian butadiene was unchanged at $1,450/mt CFR China. There were rumors that some deals had been done in the range of $1,440-1,450/mt FOM China on April 16. However the details are not available. The level of the deal was higher than current assessments of $1,430/mt Fob China. Some market participants were sceptical that end users would accept higher prices due to the weakening of demand. The demand for spot butadiene was low due to negative margins in downstream production. Suppliers were unwilling to lower their prices as the underlying supply was limited due to lower steam cracker operation.
