European Polycarbonate Imports slow down amid high freight costs / Freight costs continue impacting import flows / Asia's import flow remains quiet due to weak China demand

In spite of recent reports that freight costs were decreasing, the spot European polycarbonate industry continued to experience limited imports during the week ending August 14. According to reports, freight costs for containers from Asia are around $400/mt. This makes the product from this region less competitive than European-produced material. Sources have suggested that this could mean the European price cap, previously set by imports at competitive prices, is no longer applicable. The operating rates in Asia remain low and the demand in China is weak. A source stated that the imports of Korea will likely still be aimed at Europe.
