European HDPE - Trading activity is sluggish this week / Sources report positive demand for caps and closures / Attention is focused on September MCP settlement

The trading activity on the European markets for high density polyethylene was slow during the week ending August 28. Market participants were slowly returning from their holidays. Market sources cited positive signs in the derivative caps-and-closures industry among end-use industries. This was due to a slight increase in demand by end-users. However, overall the fundamental demand remained unchanged. A converter stated that "everyone is returning [to the market]"; the economics of July and August were quite good for caps and closures, but not for other industries such as automotive. Prices on the spot market were essentially flat over the past week for all HDPE grades. Market fundamentals had not changed much.
