Asian Ethylene: Stronger amid lower supply / Support for reduced cracker operating rates / Buying with urgency on the downside weakness

In the week ending Aug. 2, Asian ethylene prices rose, with many participants citing lower operating rates and a smaller supply pool. Some South Korean producers cut their operating rates due to persistently low ethylene production margins. The turnaround of a major South Korean producer, which is expected to start in September, will further reduce the availability and supply of spot cargoes. FOB Korea, the majority of selling indications of September-loading goods were at discounts between $32-$39/mt compared to CFR Northeast Asia. Some deals in this week were at discounts around $35/mt compared to CFR NE Asia. Separately on that day, one September-loading shipment was sold at $849/mt, FOB Korea, but the details of the deal are not available.
