Asian Ethylene: Silence on lack of clarity / Downstream weakness affects overall market sentiment / Cracker operating rates are likely to remain stable or even lower

Aug 29, 2024

On the Asian ethylene market, there were few new bids or offers on August 28 due to a lack in near-term clarity. The overall market was impacted by the weakness of downstream. Several participants said that the upcoming negotiations, which are likely to start the following week for October cargoes will be challenging to navigate due to the lower interest in buying. Some sources predicted that Asian steam crackers using naphtha would keep their operating rates at a stable level or slightly lower during September as downstream profitability began to decline. The C+F Japan Naphtha Marker was down $18.50/mt for the day on August 28. The ethylene/naphtha differential was calculated at $209.50/mt. This is lower than the usual spreads of $250/mt or $300-$350/mt among non-integrated producers.
