Asian Ethylene: Discussions resume after China Holidays / Ethylene Trade Rises in China After Golden Week / Buyers cut rates due to weak derivative demand

Discussions on the Asian ethylene market increased in the week ending Oct. 11. Trade picked up in China after the Golden Week holiday ended. Early in the week, discussions were stronger due to higher naphtha costs amid weaker derivative markets. Buyers cited weak demand for several derivatives such as polyethylene and styrene Monomer, and reduced operating rates. Producers maintained their selling indications despite a drop of $6.375/mt in feedstock price for the week. "Naphtha price fell slightly, but are still close to $700/mt. This makes our spread against ethylene at less than $150/mt very weak. "This is not sustainable and some crackers may have to reduce operating rates if these margins continue," said a Northeast Asia manufacturer.
