Asian Ethylene: Markets bullish on derivative startups in China / Chinese startups likely to lend support / Overall supply to see limited changes

The Asian ethylene markets remained bullish Nov. 6, with participants citing support from derivative startups in China, notably for polyethylene, low-density polyethylene and ethylene vinyl acetate. Market participants also expected support from the testing phases of new naphtha-fed steam crackers due for startup later this year. However, overall supply in Northeast Asia is unlikely to see significant changes, with most steam cracker operators opting to maintain current operating rates. Upstream, the C+F Japan naphtha marker down $8.50/mt day on day at $662.125/mt at the Nov. 6 Asian close. The ethylene-naphtha spread was calculated at $187.875/mt, below the typical spread of $250/mt for integrated producers and $300-$350/mt for non-integrated producers.
