On Jan. 15, the Asian ethylene market was stable, with very few bids or offers. The majority of participants were cautious due to the volatile crude oil price upstream and its possible impact on naphtha - a critical feedstock used in ethylene production. End users remained on the sidelines due to weak margins in downstream production. "The margins for polyethylene have been low for several months. The prices of polyvinylchloride are declining. Styrene monomer plant losses have prevented them from operating at full capacity. Buyers are cautious, and there are not many firm discussions. The near-term outlook is quite negative.
