Asian Ethylene: Quiet despite ongoing industry conference / Downstream bearishness caps the demand / Feedstock decrease adds to the uncertainty

On Oct. 16, the Asian ethylene spot market saw low discussion levels, with most participants attending an industry conference in Xiamen. Sources said that downstream bearishness continued weighing on the buying appetite. Some sources cited lower prices for key derivatives such as styrene, monoethylene, and polyvinyl. Low feedstock prices have also limited trade. Participants cited recent volatility in crude oil markets as contributing to the lackluster buying sentiment. The C+F Japan Naphtha Marker was down $6.875/mt for the day, closing at $661.25/mt in the Asian Close on October 16. The spread between ethylene and naphtha was calculated as $173.75/mt. This is below the usual spreads of $250/mt or $300-350/mt among non-integrated producers.
