Asian Ethylene: Few bids, offers ahead of Lunar New Year / Northeast Asian discussions stable / Southeast Asian offers higher, buyers remain cautious

The Asian ethylene market was largely stable in the week ending Jan. 17 amid rangebound discussions. Some market participants noted lesser availability for February cargoes during the week as several deals were done in the previous week. Meanwhile, most participants preferred formula-basis discussions on upstream volatility. Selling indications remained at premiums of $15/mt over CFR Northeast Asia, while buying indications were heard at $10/mt over CFR NE Asia. In the Chinese domestic markets, offers were stable at Yuan 7,600/mt. In Southeast Asia, selling indications were higher due to rising crude oil prices. However, some buyers remained cautious as spreads against key derivative polyethylene hovered around breakeven levels.
