Asian Ethylene Market: Pockets demand support the market / Buy-sell gap still exists / Higher sales indications heard

Participants noted pockets of demand across Asia during the week ending August 16. Sources in Northeast Asia noted a higher demand for ethylene from Japan due to the extended shutdown of Osaka Petrochemical’s ethylene facility. The buying appetite in other regions, such as China and Taiwan, remained muted due to weak margins at downstream plants. Several buyers reported that operating rates were reduced by 70-80% or more on average. Buying indicators remained at a premium of $1-$10/mt CFR Northeast Asia, on a formula-based basis or at $870/mt CFR NE Asia fixed-price.
