The Asian butadiene market saw prices fall in the week ending May 3, due to weaker demand and poor profitability downstream. Buyers cited eroded margins in derivative sectors such as butanediol and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene, saying that prices of butadiene remained too high for it to be profitable. Sources cited a tepid rubber demand and low stocking activity as the reasons for the limited week-to-week changes in this key downstream market. According to participants, the current tight supply will likely ease into June, as most regional turnarounds will have finished, reducing support at current prices. The feedstock market also showed limited support as naphtha fell for the second day in a row.
