Asian EDC/VCM/Chlorine: Stable amid quiet Lunar New Year holiday / Asia VCM production margins remain negative / Downstream PVC seen hitting bottom EDC

In the absence of any price discussion, Asian ethylene Dichloride remained stable at $278/mt CFR Far East Asia & CFR Southeast Asia on Jan. 28. The Asian EDC market is likely to remain under pressure. The demand for EDC is expected to be restricted due to the negative margins of vinyl chloride monomer. Asia's VCM cost, based on EDC & ethylene, was $618.54/mt as of Jan. 28. This is much higher than current VCM prices in Asia at $510/mt CFR-FE Asia. The EDC market is also weakening in other regions, including the US. The cost-based value of chlorine in Northeast Asia, calculated on Jan. 28 at minus 48.40/mt was unchanged from the figure for Jan. 23.
